Grade 7

Seventh Grade

Students in seventh grade are enrolled in four core courses of Science, Language Arts, Early American History, and Math for the full year. Introduction to Language I, App Creators, Creativity and Design, Health/Physical Education, and Art are required in a seven-week rotation course.  Students participate in the Skills for Life Program, Chorus, or Band, for five days per week for the full year.

ELA

Description
This course is designed to further develop the reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and critical thinking skills necessary for academic success. Emphasis will be placed on literature study, vocabulary development, writing, grammar, and research/reference skills. Students will explore a range of genres—fiction and nonfiction—from both a reading and writing standpoint.

Pre-Algebra

Description
This course will enhance students’ prerequisite skills for Algebra 1 as they master the PA Common Core assessment categories: Ratios and Proportional Relationships, the Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Students will foster a real-life perception of mathematical concepts as they build upon Math 6 skills and understanding.

Description

Science

Description
This course assists students in becoming life-long learners who grow in their understanding of the world. Concepts learned will be the foundation for future science classes and preparation for the science PSSA.  This class will be a combination of Earth and Life science and the curriculum follows the Next Generation Science Standards.  As part of the curriculum appropriate laboratory behavior is required to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all students and instructors in the science classroom.  The topics taught in earth science are layers of the earth, minerals, rocks, continental drift,  plate tectonics, topography,  earthquakes, water cycle and weather maps and fronts.  The topics taught in life science are biotic and abiotic, food webs, symbiosis, biodiversity, biomes, short and long term environmental impacts.  In addition, scientific method and nature of science concepts are taught throughout the year.  

History

Description
The main focus of this course pertains to the study of American history from the Age of Discovery and the Colonization period to the “Young" Republic.  Students will be exposed to the historical, geographic, political, economic, and sociological events which influenced the development of the United States and the resulting impact on world history. Furthermore, students will develop an understanding between cause and effect in historical events.  Finally, students will have the opportunity to explore these fundamental ideas and events through various models of instruction.
